MFW I first seen it without subtitles, thinking it was to make us empathise with the bride as she didn't speak Mandarin/Cantonese well, and then seeing it with subtitles.

The reason behind this is that in Japanese the L and R sounds are extremely similar, thus causing confusion when Japanese people try to speak English, which has separate sounds for L and R.

It also makes it very hard for non-japanese people to pronounce the "r" sound in Japanese. I had such trouble with that when I was learning the language.

actually, in Japanese, they don't have L or R, it's just one sound sounds like "rrrlrr"

that's why in Death note they called him "Kira" instead of "killer"
