On the eastern side of the U.S. ,fire brigades would compete with other local or neighboring fire brigades. The flashier and more regal your pumper looked, the more reputation you had. The prominent and wealthy departments would paint their apparatus red because red paint was very expensive. Many departments still paint their engines and trucks red today to keep tradition and obviously because the color stands out.
