In the original Legend of Zelda for the NES, the Triforce pieces were originally intended to be microchips with the game being set in the past and the future. That's why the main character's name is Link, as he would have been the link between them.

Actually he was named Link because he is the link between the player and the LoZ universe.

Eiji Aonuma said "When a player is playing a Zelda game, my desire is for the player to truly become Linkā€”that's why we named him Link, so the player is linked to the game and to the experience."

Aonuma only worked on LoZ since Ocarina. Miyamoto, creator of the Zelda series, says otherwise. I'd trust him.
