In the original Legend of Zelda for the NES, the Triforce pieces were originally intended to be microchips with the game being set in the past and the future. That's why the main character's name is Link, as he would have been the link between them.

Actually he was named Link because he is the link between the player and the LoZ universe.

Aonuma only worked on LoZ since Ocarina. Miyamoto, creator of the Zelda series, says otherwise. I'd trust him.
