A lot of people think he was a poor villain because of his lack of character development, but his role in the show was more symbolic than anything. He was the embodiment of evil, and what makes him unique as a villain is that he wasn't really defeated by the Mane 6 or Shining and Cadance. They were actually powerless to stop him, and without the relic of the Crystal Heart, they would have succumbed to his attrition. I don't even know what the crystal ponies powered the Heart with, but all of the cutesy wootsy lovey dovey ideals of the protagonists were useless against him. They had to acquire a stone that acted as a conduit for those feelings, Daring Do style.
What was apparent was that as an enemy, he was seemingly indefatigable and insuperable when faced in battle, but he was vulnerable to the unity of his former subjects or "slaves," when they came together with the happiness and amity in their hearts that he had oppressed.

That's a new and interesting take on the position Sombra fulfilled in the story. I which I had thought of that earlier.

I dont think that'de work for me. The reason he seemed so dark and cruel, is because he is in such stark contrast to the cutesy nature of everything else. Its sort of the old saying that in order to be able to appreciate gain you have to know loss. He stands out as such a cruel bastard, becouse his sort of the only thing in the show to actually be able to be considered cruel.

ah ok....i thought it was wierd that the first 2 seasons had more then 20 eps but 3rd had 13, so i figured it was the last. and in a way somba was a focus or rather the reason for the test and forcus on twi. like other openers they had multiple focuses. either way i dont like the fact somba was pushed off to the side like he was just a bg character.

Welp, the producers DID mention that they plan on including more overarching stories, and if you look at the episodes, luna and celestia seem to put quite a bit of importance into the crystal empire, with finding a way to protect it being a "test" for twilight to prepare her for something bigger.

Anyways, all I'm saying is that perhaps, in future episodes, there will be more things that will show up that will link everything together, in that it will make the season 3 opener look more like an introduction to something more grand, with sombra being at the heart of it.

But I guess that's just me being hopeful lol.

crazy story, I had a weird dream last night( Strangely Coherent....Except Sombra had an afro.....The fuck?) that he was evil cause he killed his parents and all the crystal ponies go back to being dead(1000 years has past so ya) and they thank the mane 6 for helping them then they just DIE......creepy as weird.....

Idk, it all depends on what you like.
I heard bronies going on about "omg it doesn't get good until episode four" or whatever it is, so I decided to watch a middle episode from series two.
I still didn't like it, but that's just me.

Tbh, when my friend convinced me to watch the first episode of season 1, I wasn't really hooked. After I watched a couple more, I just had to continue.. I think it started to get addicting after episode 3

Yeah, like what orangepikmin said especially, the season premieres and finales are very different from the bulk of the seasons. After the premiere and before the finale, most episodes are isolated stories emphasizing the particular characters in more conventional conflicts rather than the high-stakes crises of the premieres and finales. Though there's occasionally a broad story arch that'll be built up throughout the season, such as the Galloping Galla in season one.

It depends on what episode you watched. Any of the season premieres will do you good, but if it was an episode like 'The Ticket Master' then you definitely need to watch another episode.

I would say to watch some of the middle episodes of either season. It may give a spoiler or two for the beginning ones, but they are a good representation of the show in general.
