Since I'm a collegiate nerd I decided to do a little research on this.. it's actually really similar to the Willamette River in Oregon (for those of you who are familiar with it). During times of high rainfall the sewer systems occasionally overflow, spilling into the Seine and increasing the concentration of bacteria. But other times it's no different than any other city waterway. And the water quality has improved enough in recent years to allow Atlantic salmon to return to the river.. not that I'd personally try drinking it.

Not like anyone in France wants to be clean anyway.
