i think i can shed some light on the situation. The mayan calendar is a circular calendar that repeats itself every 16.4 billion years. The beginning of a new rotation is commonly predicted as december 21 2012. The new rotation traditionally ushers in a new era. People have interpreted this as the end of the era of humans. Assuming that they're right and it will usher in a new era, do you really think that that means we all die? Im getting off topic, but what i meant to say is it's a counting/calculating game, that i think they associated with the correlations between their "predictions" and real world events. Therefore, leap years mean nothing.
Tl;dr they counted and calculated, and its probably not anything anyway.

i like you, i think everyone is over reacting with this whole thing. and if we're wrong and something does end up happening, we'll all be dead and no one can say "i told you so" XD

The mayan "long-Count" Calendar had absolutely nothing to do with the solar cycle. It was based on pure math.

from the sound of it, its not that the mayans didnt account for leap years, if anything it would be the people who calculated the date didn't account for leap years.

They also found other Myan calenders that go past for centuries past this December.

They did though, it was more accurate then our current way of calculating leap years.

I think December 21 2012 is the result of the interpretation and calculations by modern archaeologists, not what is said literally in the calendar. I mean, considering everything, the date predicted would come to be modern December 21. But hey, I have no idea, just my opinion

But the mayans never said the world would end. The mayans celebrated time in periods of 900 and some odd (cant remember specifically) years. The mayan holy number is 13. guess when the 13th of one of these periods ends? You guessed it. Religious celebration, not the Apocalypse.

This could be true, I deny nothing as I don't have sources for my facts and neither have you. The Mayans beleived, a beleif that they got from the "gods" which was a tall, seafaring people who arrived long ago and gave them the knowledge of "human cycles", meaning human civilization came, was destroyed and built up again according to the mayans. This is the 4th cycle according to them. There most probably won't be an apocalypse this time around, but someday it will.
