Is darkness the absence of light, or is light the absence of dark?

Darkness is the absence of light. When you get absolute dark, there is no light, and you cannot get darker than that. But you can always get brighter by adding more light.
Or something like that, I learned it a long time ago

That's real philosophical 'n' **** , Terry, but dark don't travel. Dark is just the absence of light, light being the tiny visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum to which our eyes are attuned. Much the same as cold does not flow, darkness does not move.

On a quantum scale, light is composed of photons. There is no quantum of darkness. Darkness doesn't travel and thus has no speed. Another way to think of it is that darkness is a property of space that is diminished by the presence of EM radiation.

So many people geting all ``darkness is absence of light blah blah blah``.
We know, he know...everyone knows that. He is comedy/fantasy writer and his quote cant be taken as scientific fact so stop trying to disprove it.

Terry Pratchett is one of the best authors to ever put ink to paper. I hope he finds happiness wherever he goes.

Darkness is an ABSENCE of light. This is like saying "'nobody' beats me in a race, therefore 'nobody' is faster than me". Also, darkness is quite pathetic, having fled from light in every circumstance throughout recorded and non-recorded history; to play off of the personification used by the author of this particular quotation.

this is like saying, the absence of myself is waiting for me where ever I go

If light is so fast, how come its never caught a ninja?

who knows where this is from?

The speed of dark is the same as the speed of light, since it occurs whenever light leaves, which leaves at the speed of light.

Rocks exist in Northern Arizona and no matter how fast I run there they will be there before me, but if you think that means that those rocks are "faster" than me then you are an interesting person.

Just me? Okay then.

This is actually a scientific fact, if you take darkness to be the expansion of the universe. The universe is actually expanding faster than the speed of light, and it has been since the big bang. And I don't mean that the stuff in the universe is expanding that fast, the nothingness that defines the boundary is expanding that fast. It's crazy stuff.
