Guy Fawkes (Or Guido Fawkes) was essentially a pawn in a plot to blow up the houses of Parliament in England using gunpowder in the tunnels that run underneath the building. It was during a time of religious scrutiny for the catholic faith (they were hunted down and killed by the protestant officials). He was stopped in the act which is why we set off fireworks (gunpowder), have bonfires where we burn a puppet that's dressed up like him and eat 'candy apples' (Severed heads would be dipped in tar - yum).
