brave new world or 1984 my friend. both express the thought of freedom, from the inhabitants, whilst from the outside clearly being in a state of slavery.

Yes but that seems a drastic difference than being out of the cage (especially since you specified locking him away forever) so that isn't really a "thin line."

A better example would be subtle manipulation. In this one believes they're free while someone else pulls their strings, thus there is a "thin line" in that situation since the "slave" has no idea of his own "cage."
