Stupid idiot, the B flat chromatic scale goes up by half-steps, therefore the third note is a C! CHROMATIC! What you mean is concert B flat major scale, so then the third note would be an E because the trumpet's concert B flat scale is its C major scale!
#121 - WolfRider (11/03/2012) [-]
in any chromatic scale C will always be the third note of a Bb
#117 - cynicalskin (11/03/2012) [-]
I'm pretty sure the third note in the B flat major scale for trumpets is an E.

Notes of scale in order: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C

Unless it's not a B flat trumpet?
#122 to #117 - anonymous (11/03/2012) [-]
no its a C

B flat B natural B sharp (also known as C) its a chromatic scale technically that is concert D.

yeah, I know, I accidentally read "b flat major scale" instead of "b flat chromatic scale". sorry for the confusion

**** , I didn't see that you said the B flat chromatic scale, I thought you said the B flat major scale. Sorry about that, you're correct OP.

D is the fifth note in the chromatic scale, not the third. It's the third note in the key of plain ol' Bb.

The Bb Chromatic Scale on trumpet starts on a C eg: C,C#,D,D#...
User avatar #93 to #91 - konkeydong (11/02/2012) [-]
not concert Bb, but trumpet which is a step up

You see, this content is humorous because the third note of the B-flat chromatic scale is a C. Now, you ask, but that's the C, not the D, how is this funny? Well, this is because we assume that the content maker is talking about a standard concert band in which the trumpet players typically play on B-flat trumpets. In doing so, the notes that they read on their music are actually sounded a full step lower than written. So, if a trumpet player reads a D, they are actually playing a concert C. Thus, if the female trumpet player wanted to know the third note in the B-flat chromatic scale, a C, she really wanted the D.

Love, a music ed major.

Even if you mistakenly forget to take into consideration both the word "chromatic" and the fact that the trumpet is not in concert C major, one's first instinct is to think of a Bb major scale and count Bb, then C, then D. You can "get it" even if you mess up and therefore don't truly get it! Me gusta.
#125 to #87 - jwpro (11/03/2012) [-]
its a concert D because they are playing on a B flat instrument.

They were probably talking about the concert key, which starts on C for trumpets. Trumpets are a B flat instrument.
#73 - anonymous (11/02/2012) [-]
But a chromatic scale starting on Bb would be a Db/C# A Bb Concert scale would have D as the third note.

And even then if you were both playing trumpet, which is in a natural key of Bb, you would have to play a C scale to be in Bb concert pitch
