Atoms going through alpha decay release alpha particles, which have 2 neutrons, 2 protons and no electrons.
In other words, they are He2+ ions. Or the nucleus of a helium atom.

Just in case you didn't get it.

How can one be more alpha than alpha itself?

Went out for Halloween last night...
>Meet a guy
>"Whats your name?"
>"Steve"
>"Hey Steve!"... FF a few hours
>Making out n' **** "so, you remember my name?"
>"Derp..."
>"I don't really like Derp... I prefer Derpan. And you're..."
>"I'm Steve, I'm awesome"
>"...Okay...Ever feel alpha Steve?" *he SO wont get this one*
>"Sweetie, I'm no alpha. I'm mother ******* beta x10"

MFW

TL;DR?
Steve is not alpha, he is beta x10.

... Is this to do with software or radioactive decay?
Hah.
I'm not sure I get it. Props to you.

Met a guy that is familiar with the chan and internetz that is not just Facebook or some stupid basketball site.
Has nothing to do with radioactive decay or software.

So why the times ten? :P
User avatar #14 to #13 - BabyPainter (01/09/2013) [-]
...I asked him if he considered himself an alpha..
There are many "alpha-beta" jokes around the interwebz.
He replied that he is not alpha (superior)
he is beta (not superior) but times 10.
So he is 10 beta's and not 1 alpha....

I actually don't know how much clearer I could explain a joke.

I still don't get you're joke, by the way.

I'm serious

Maybe I'm thick, or something.

I understood all of what you said perfectly, I was just wondering why times ten so specifically. I mean, does it mean anything?
User avatar #15 to #14 - wiredguy [OP] (01/09/2013) [-]
I understood all of that, I was just wondering if "10 * beta >= alpha" was a specific reference to anything :/
Sorry.

I was kidding about the aspergers. By the way :).

I understand the joke perfectly.

It just doesn't make any concrete mathematical sense... I was wondering if you had somehow lapsed in explaining it to me, but apparently not, so never mind.

Is it a common phrase where you are? It isn't around here.
User avatar #20 to #19 - BabyPainter (04/12/2013) [-]
No... no its not.
... I think I'm done now.
User avatar #17 to #15 - BabyPainter (04/11/2013) [-]
Okay so, now I have to break down the joke. My dear, you are too technical.
Its not a specific scientific reference, its just a joke
but if you need me to I will.
In this instance alpha > beta and as such alpha is superior to beta. If alpha > beta then beta is not.
Now if I asked you "Would you consider yourself a dime?"
and you said "No sweety, I consider myself $0.01 x 10!"
It would essentially mean you consider yourself a penny x10 instead of a whole dime.
Or "Do you consider yourself a General?"(Militant)
and you reply "No sweety, I consider myself a private x10!"
Not that it is the same thing but it is similar and that is the point.
That being said alpha is still > beta but beta being x10 would make beta x10 >= alpha.
And so, that is the joke... any more in depth break downs of jokes?
And you are probably not thick... You may have Aspergers.
Or you just genuinely don't understand the joke. In which case I can no longer help you and you definitely should get checked for aspergers...
