In the actual story, Oedipus stabbed his eyes out with pins when he learned that he killed his father and ****** his mother. Hence why his eyes are closed in this picture, he's now blind.

The story is actually about the nature of justice. Oedipus, who became the king of Thebes after outwitting the Sphinx and freeing the city from it's oppression, goes on a quest to find the murderer of the last king. The city falls victim to plague, and a prophet tells him that the plague will be lifted when justice is met. Over the course of his investigations, he finds that he was the one who killed the last king, having attacked him and his guard on the road in a delirious state and somehow killing all but one guy who got away. How he comes about the knowledge of his true heritage was through a combination of prophets, witnesses, and a courier from his foster parents telling him that he was adopted. After putting all the pieces together, he finds that not only did he kill the late king, but he was also his son, and that he had married and ****** his own mother. After poking his eyes out in horror, he gives himself absolute punishment to lift the curse from Thebes, publicly exiling himself to the mountains where he was left to die as a baby, and where he will most likely die as a blind man.

What do you think a modern day politician would do in this scenario? Keep in mind, Oedipus didn't have to reveal his revelation to anyone.
