Warning: There is an intelligent Muslim and an arrogant Atheist arguing in the comments. Proceed with caution.

>Implying that other organized religions (Christianity!) don't also set humanity back in scientific advances.

Like the priest that worked to help come up with the big bang theory and the countless monasteries that recorded science and history and made sure it survived the plague and the dark ages.

I'm not saying there aren't good Christians out there who contribute to science. That'd be as absurd as saying there are Muslims out there who don't contribute to science. What I'm saying is that, as a whole, all organized religion has interfered with the advancement of scientific technology in some way or another.
#66 to #47 - volcanobakemeat (10/26/2012) [-]
If the dark age's didn't happen I'd be flying a horse genetically modified to look like a unicorn that ***** ******* rainbows through the artificially-produced-atmosphere of Mars right now.
#68 to #66 - johnshepherd (10/26/2012) [-]
I'm not arguing about the dark ages being good or bad, I'm pointing out that, without the Church's manuscripts, we would have lost significantly more of ancient culture and learning and would have been set back far more.
#69 to #68 - volcanobakemeat (10/26/2012) [-]
I completely agree, it was fantastic that they did that. Just keep in mind that the same religion that did that was the cause of the dark ages. They did one thing good, but they also did something much much worse. Overall, I can decisively say that Christianity has hurt the advancement of science. while that one particular instance you mentioned helped science, it doesn't make up for all of the other ways that Christianity has hurt science.
#70 to #69 - johnshepherd (10/26/2012) [-]
The Church didn't cause the dark ages, this is actually a common misconception. The dark ages were largely the result of the collapse of the Roman Empire, which had controlled huge amounts of land before it's fall, and the sudden loss of this authority caused widespread chaos in the territories it previously held. Just out of curiousity, what other areas were you thinking of? I assume you are going to cite Gallileo, but aside from that example, what else is there?
#71 to #70 - volcanobakemeat (10/26/2012) [-]
Sorry for my ignorance, I truly have no ground to stand here as I honestly am not as well informed as I should be on the topic.
#72 to #71 - johnshepherd (10/26/2012) [-]
No problem, dude. Feel free to re-visit the discussion after you beef up a bit, or we can have a discussion of the dark ages here if you'd like. I love all things Rome, so I know a fair bit about it, especially pre-empire.

Forgot Deism.
User avatar #59 to #42 - srapture (10/25/2012) [-]
I like the idea of Deism. It's quite logical. "A creator... that kind of makes sense... Not sure about all the stories in these 'holy' books though. For all we know it might be none of these deities but an unknown one."
User avatar #34 to #21 - srapture (10/25/2012) [-]
Muslim and Islam are the same thing.
#39 to #34 - anonymous (10/25/2012) [-]
kind of ironic for atheism to be in the god tier
User avatar #29 to #21 - theholum (10/25/2012) [-]
Why are atheists and buddhists in the "God tier"?
#43 to #29 - anonymous (10/25/2012) [-]
because they're the only ones that don't have a god that tells them to hate everyone else
User avatar #22 to #21 - nighthit (10/25/2012) [-]
...What's the difference between Islam and Muslim? Isn't Muslim just people whom believe in Islam?
User avatar #23 to #22 - fenrirr (10/25/2012) [-]
I generally consider Islam to be associated with the Middle-easy and the Muslims to be in India

I have seen "Muslims" and then I have seen "Islamic"

Muslims are generally wary about what they say and try not to start anything (at least in Canada)

Islamic people are the brutish version who start wars over comics of Muhammad
User avatar #40 to #23 - ilikethisusername (10/25/2012) [-]
Muslims are people who believe in Islam. And no, not all of them are so violent when they are offended.
User avatar #33 to #23 - jittersfj (10/25/2012) [-]
Indians are Hindu you ******* idiot. Muslims are people who believe in Islam. You ******* moron.

User avatar #26 to #23 - thelonelyfeel (10/25/2012) [-]
The majority of people in India practice Hinduism.
User avatar #24 to #23 - nighthit (10/25/2012) [-]
Just out of curiosity, would you include Turkey in your brutish version?
User avatar #25 to #24 - fenrirr (10/25/2012) [-]
I don't know, I have personally never experience anyone from Turkey or heard anything negative about them in the news or in history.

I am neutral unless I find evidence to the contrary

islam was never a "middle-age" religion. it was once highly advanced for its time, but after the ottoman empire collapsed western countries split it up to serve their own interests without any regards as to how state lines should actually be drawn (examples: iran and iraq, people there speak different languages, have different beliefs, etc.) soon after, the palestinians were kicked out of their land and replaced with jews, islams enemy from way back in muhammad's time. theres a reason why muslims in the middle east hate the west, and it extends to much more than just religion. but none of you european or american users would know that, because your news serves specific interests and is extremely filtered.
#60 to #14 - rubbishcomicsandco (10/25/2012) [-]
Well...we can't tell if this is an aggressive comment...but thanks for the input we knew it wasn't exactly true but we thought it made a funny comic...we also feel like we have wondered onto youtube with all the religious debates...
#31 to #14 - anonymous (10/25/2012) [-]
So you're telling me it's bad if people of different religion and language are forced to live in the same country, yet most Western governments believe in multiculturalism which strives to achieve exactly that.

I didn't know Muhammed was an Arab Scientist.

Arab scientists invented a lot of maths, chemistry and astrophysics principles too. Not even an Arab.

As an Arab Muslim, who is a liberal and believes in theistic evolution, I'm experiencing massive butt hurt.
