I was going to ask if this is real, but I saw that it is a few posts down.... This is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard of as far as security goes (but it would be convenient).
iOS isn't exactly 100% secure and skimming is already a problem with hard coded Eftpos terminals..... if you know a about encryption and electronics it's really not hard if you have physical access to the machine to record the transaction and then run a brute force decryption
Now you can run your card directly through something that can be "hacked" to skim your details in an instant.... in fact the iphone could even do the decrypting... mind you it'd be pretty slow.
Now I don't normally wear a tin foil hat (I don't even often run an antivirus) but this idea has the potential for a colossal clusterfuck once someone works out what they can do with the card reader and a jailbroken iphone.. eg a shop keeper, does his normal transactions, skims the card's details and sells them, it's known to happen.
The only idea worse than this is using NFC or RFID for transactions... you don't even have to be close to the phone or credit card to activate it... If you increase the wattage on an RFID reader, and are able to direct the electromagnetic waves at a credit card and receive them... you can steal credit card information at a distance of maybe 5-30 meters depending on which part of the RFID you need.
