Saying that a country won the civil war is like saying you beat yourself at chess.

Technically we won the Civil war. Although it was against ourselves so it was a given.

We defeated AND annexed Petoria. What now, Simon?
User avatar #5 - hadrian (10/12/2012) [+] (28 replies)
We started a war with Mexico. We won it.
We started wars with the Native Americans. We won them.
We started a war with Spain and blamed it on them. We won it.

Does that answer your question?

Well technically we won our war in the pacific with the Japanese, in fact we obliterated them. But it's not something to be proud of for us because of the way we won.

America v Japan was like somebody poking you and you turn round and hit them with a brick.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. There are just some arguments you cant win, simply because the other side is too stupid.

I agree with you sir. As the saying goes:

Never argue with a stupid person. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

It is fair to say that America did its part in both World Wars, in WWI Americans helped break the stalemate on the Western front, but the sacrifices of the other allied powers was far greater than that of the Americans and in the treaty of Paris it is evident as the other powers completely obliterated Wilson's 14 Points. In WWII America was fairly key in defeating the Japanese with the Island hopping campaign, bombardment of Japan, and naval battles. Americans also kept England afloat in Europe by sending them supplies and opening up another theater of war in Africa with operation Torch. However to say that America did all alone is idiotic, but to say it could of been done with out American help is equally idiotic. Sorry for the rant history major and junk.

Well civil war i guess, but that doesnt really count. We entered WW1 because of the Zimmerman telegram, the sinking of the Lusitania (unrestricted submarine warfare), and the fact that we had good ties with the Allied European countries and wanted to help our friends. We entered WW2 because of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, however we did not declare war on anyone else but Japan. A few days after Pearl Harbor Hitler declared war on the U.S. so that is why we got involved in the European Front. Technically we declared war on japan and beat them without any major aid from other countries. Also the combined assault on D-Day played a pretty big part in the war, that was lead by the US as well as most of the Allied powers. I guess we never did start a war independently and win it, but we never entered a war to "take all the glory"
