Dexter is a person who feels the need to kill due to a traumatizing childhood event. His (adoptive) dad ( a cop) taught him to channel those feelings by killing criminals who "deserve" to die rather than randomly killing innocent people, and also how to not get caught doing so. He is a serial killer. the girl is his (unrelated) sister.
