if I were an evil villain, I would set the bomb at 5 minutes and tell the hero that it was set to detonate at a completely random time within the 5 minutes. So it could blow up after 5 minutes, or it could blow up after 20 seconds.

While they're shitting their pants trying to deactivate it, they won't figure out that the timer is actually just a clock taped to the bomb and that the bomb is really set to explode when any of the wires are cut.
