There was a short story by Ray Bradbury about a small group of astronauts dying after their ship had been torn apart.
The main astronaut reflects on his life and wonders if it was worth it, as all of his friends and coworkers die around him.
He slowly realizes that... no, it wasn't worth it at all. He hasn't changed anything. He hasn't made a real difference in anyone's life. Eventually, he's the last one left alive, as he drifts towards the Earth.
The last thing he does, as he enters Earth's atmosphere and starts burning up, is wonder if this will change anything at all.
Meanwhile, in a small town on Earth, a child looks up at a shooting star, and makes a wish.
