Learn the difference. The Above is what is known as "Gangsta Rap", or what killed hip hop. The bottom is more underground, sure, but it's a lot better than the shit on the radio in my opinion. The top is what gives rap a bad name, because that's all you ever hear. If people were to, for ONE DAY, just listen to some of the people I've listed, maybe they'd see rap differently.
Also, feel free to add to my ever growing list. What rappers do you think are good?

word of advice. some of the best rappers and hip hop artists don't have wikipedia pages. Finding some good dudes is like a godsend.

there is nothing wrong with gangsta rap or trap music (also, lil john and lil wayne are both purely pop as far as I'm concerned, not gansta rappers). I have no problem switching between Nas and Young Jeezy or Tech N9ne and Gucci mane. Most of them still make great songs, and even the highly repetitive artists like jeezy and waka are masters of flow and just making great musical/lyrical combinations, even if they're sometimes simplistic. And then there's gangsta rappers that are extremely talented, like Wiz Khalifa, Dr Dre, Biggie, at least those are a few I consider really great. I'm not saying that this is the only good kind of hip-hop. I'm just saying all popular artists are popular for a reason, you don't make money without making music lots of people really enjoy.
by the way, I mentioned him earlier, but you need to check out tech n9ne if you're into that underground stuff. I started off by listening to the LP All 6's and 7's but he has a ton of music out there. Also if you somehow haven't heard of Bone Thugs 'n' Harmony, I bet you'd like them too.
