Everyone knows it was really just a money laundering scheme.
Saget was in on it too. AFV acted as a middleman for criminal organizations trying to hire hitmen, safecrackers, hackers, and the like. The winner knew several weeks in advance (the actual hiring was done in secret) so that he/she/it/dolphin could kidnap/coerce/clone a family and stage a "funny" video. The reason they're not funny is because they're so rushed and because the "family" is being forced to participate against their will (or because they're just bad actors). Then Saget awards them the prize money (taking a cut for himself of course) and they go about their villainous business.

Well, after 2 years on FJ I have developed such sense of humor that there are few things beside a certain friend (also a funnyjunker) that can make me laugh outside the interwebz.
