A widely accepted theory as to why the water vanished is due to the likelihood of a solar flare in the form of a CME (coronal mass ejection {pockets of convection just below the surface of the sun reach critical mass}), which came along and blew away most of the magnetic strength from the core of the planet, and wiping out most of the ozone layer.

why are your cm's different ?

Well, that pic is from NASA, but I would assume distance of the ground from the picture. The Mars one was taken closer than the Earth one.
