These are the two extremes of LARP: Historical reenactment (like you see with the Civil War reenactments), and full-on "LIGHTNING BOLT" D&D style LARP with hit points and stats, where if your character dies, you have to make a new one.
In some LARPing groups, you have to make a character and go through a painfully boring process to determine stats and other bullshit. Essentially, it's D&D but with foam swords.
What MY groups does is closer to medieval historical reenactment, but with a fantasy twist to it. In my group, you can either go by your birth name, or make up an original, creative name to be called by. For instance, I am "Silas Garth, King of Del'Gaz, and Lord of Dragons". My group has around nine active members (considered to be a large group).
TL,DR: My group is awesome, and you should find one to join. Eventually, we will meet on the field of battle, and when I find you, we will celebrate. I'll leave you a link (you'll need to add the dots).

I am part of a LARP group called Amtgard. It is a global LARPing group. We do medieval foam weapon fighting. You create a persona, sign a wavier and most groups will have players that will teach you how to make garb and weapons.

Part of my plan is to start small. Get my seven or nine guys to recruit. We'll hold events, and find more folks to join us. Eventually, we'll raise money for a road trip all up and down New England for a summer, and find and destroy every LARPing group that we come across. We will tell them to warn the next group that "Del'Gaz is coming."
Every group that we meet on the battlefield will be tested in the heat of combat. We will take note, and make honorary Degans from the best of the best. We will repeat this process every year or two, and we will bring Del'Gaz to the top, with a kingdom in every state.
Our mission is to bring LARP out of the taboo "Eww! That's so nerdy!" area of thought, and make it more mainstream. Our goal is to make LARP more socially acceptable. Like "Yeah, he LARP's, so what?", and eventually, Del'Gaz will become somewhat more exclusive, and we will come back better than ever.
Today, New England... Tomorrow, THE WORLD!!!
