Jihad is misinterpreted by some Muslims, that's a huge problem. They read "holy war" which it means, but they think it's a holy war between ''infidels'' and themselves, the holy ones.

But it's actually a holy war fought within each and every individual, religion or no religion. The war between good and bad inside of you. To be nice, healthy, succesful, happy, courageous among other qualities.

I believe a religion is exactly what the people in it think it is, no matter what the original intent of the writings are. In the us, islam is a peaceful religion. In Egypt, it is an antisemitic religion, in afganistan it is a warlike way of life. It is used for the purposes of those in power.
