Not saying it's a bad thing, it's just that I play viola and it makes me feel a little sad when people act like my instrument's never even existed or something.

A viola is somewhat similar to the violin, however, the viola's strings are an octave lower than a violin's. A viola's strings are A,D,G,C as opposed to the violin's higher E,A,D,G.

Actually it's not an octave.
Each of the viola's strings is a fourth below the violin's corresponding strings.

Strings (from lowest to highest)
Viola C G D A
Violin G D A E

If I remember correctly when I was in 5th grade my orchestra teacher says it would sound better but eh idk all im 100% sure about is that the violin and viola have 3 common stings and the violins 4th string is higher than the viols 4th string

i know nothing about violins and violin-type instruments, but couldn't you just tighten the strings to an e-tuning instead?

You could, but the tension would be excessive and the probability for a snap or your bridge breaking would be rather high.

just like the standard tuning of my e-bass =D
