This is what the OP on 4chan wrote. The story starts off "a long time ago" and has no transition back to the current time of now, so "earlier" should be in relation to "a long time ago."
Without transitioning back to the present this is the grammatically correct statement:
"This happened a long time ago... She went to jail a couple of months later..."
Assuming that the greentext takes place in the past and everything else is the present, here is the grammatically correct statement:
"This happened a long time ago... She went to jail a couple of months ago..."
