Solomon the Wise

There's a story in the bible (old testament) about Solomon's wisdom. Solomon supposedly had the wisdom of god or something like that.
So in the story there are 2 women who live in the same house and they both have babies. One mother accidentally smothers her child one night. Then she claims that the other woman's baby is hers. So they go to king Solomon, and he says "cut the baby in half, and we'll give each woman half", knowing that the real mother would never agree to that, because she'd want the child to live. Lo and behold, one woman agrees and the other doesn't. The one who doesn't agree is the real mom.

People back then weren't very smart, but that's basically the story.

That was always one of my favorite Bible stories but I never really understood why it was in there. I mean, God created the universe, so it's already implied that he's smart. Did we really need an example?

Maybe back then a simple idea like this was considered genius.

The mother could be fat/baby could be small, she rolls over in her sleep and squishes the baby. Seems fairly viable to me.

I went back and read the story (it's only like 2 paragraphs), and it says that the baby died when the woman lay down on it (literal translation from hebrew). I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and say that they probably meant that she rolled onto the baby in her sleep or something of the sort.

But i've heard it argued that's out of context, author wasn't solomon, was talking about his lover and that he was just tan.
