know what's just as bad as being a religious zealot? Being the kind of person who revels in taking stabs at anyone who holds to thought or beliefs that you don't agree with. Isn't a major grievance amongst atheists the way that religious people bash the beliefs of others? Why emulate the very thing you attempt to be different from?

Atheists don't have anything in common besides "There is no god." We have no central dogma, we have no mass, we have nothing that says we have to act a certain way. It's the entire point of being atheist. I am actually antitheist. I firmly believe that all religion is evil and should be abolished. Not so much the misguided people in North America, but all those other religions that have a firm grasp on the governments of other countries, limiting freedoms and speech, forcing their people to remain ignorant and not advance society like they should be doing.
So, individually, on my own, not associated with any group, I bash on religion as a way to express my distaste of it.

The difference being that I don't base my hate on a 1,000 year old book and nothing else. I base my hate on the ignorant and simply inhumane way of dealing with society that religion teaches people. It benefits NOBODY to spread that kind of thinking around. Scientific knowledge and advancement comes to a screeching halt if all anyone's told is "God did it and anyone who tells you otherwise is satan in disguise trying to trick you."
I can completely sympathize with you, I'm Jewish and grew up in South Texas, surrounded by a great deal of staunch, bigoted catholics. I know I can say that on the whole we are not a people who has spread violence or hate and we don't send out missionaries to use the promise of food and medicine to convert and destroy cultures. But after years of holding a burning hatred for christianity I've come to see that whether you love or hate something, it takes passionate emotion and energy and holds on to your mind and thinking and honestly they just don't deserve it. I would not raise a finger for them but nor would I go out of my way to argue with them, I've spoken to those missionaries and busy bodies who hang out near clubs and restaurants at night and try to ruin everyones good time with guilt and I've convinced some people to be open to other things, but I don't expect to change everyones opinion to the point that we stop seeing the behavior that we apparently mutually have a distaste for.
