I believe that is the point. It is saying that there is so much context and different sounding letters that the english language is a bitch to learn. Then there is the silent letters, oh lawdy the silent letters.

I only speak english, bad english, and english with a heavy southern accent. I can't really argue the point.

they do spelling tests once a week from first to 6th grades and each year the word get longer hand harder to say......

i had spelling tests up till year 6 and im from England..

I had spelling tests in my honors english class last year (I was a sophmore then) the words just get harder and harder so it's not actually that stupid...like it's not every day someone says sangfroid.

Obviously they have spelling test. Any teacher of any grade k-degree cares about spelling.

I'm Canadian and I had spelling tests up to Grade 7. Mind you they're mostly used to get us prepped for class. Sort of a mind-readying thing for learning.
