That is sad, I live in a redneck down in the back woods of Idaho and I learned everything up there and then some because they wanted their students to play sports and not starve... though they were drunk a lot.

What classes have you / are you taking? I'm not close minded I'm perfectly willing to debate this and if you can provide a good counter argument instead of just calling me an "piece of shit" my opinion might change, but so far all survey data I've been presented with has different indications.

Because the thumbing system was meant for things that are funny. People found it funny, so they thumbed it up. Also because rotinaj is right, I am a junior in highschool and have yet to learn any of that.

It doesn't matter if he's right, in an argument if you start insulting the other person without due provocation there are 2 things that happen. Bystanders will consider you have no counter argument, not only that it's extremely disrespectful.
People on this website tend to have a lack of politeness, in a debate you don't call someone stupid because you're disagreeing with them, if they manage to successfully counter all your points while you call them an idiot, the shoe will be on the other foot.

I've considered the proceeding, I'm at this point a little bored with the actual discussion, so we'll just forget that unless anyone really wants to debate it, but why is it funny to needlessly rude to someone who states their opinion in a calm orderly manner in accordance with the best of their knowledge based on what they believe to be reasonable survey data? Why instead of viewing my opinion in the neutral kind of way and skipping it should it be thumbed down. It is also valid to point out that many no longer fallow the thumb system to simply mean humor when you consider the amount of the fallowing types of posts that have reached the front page: feels, breast pictures, nostolgia, thumbwhoring, trend, alternative art, and at times creepypasta. I think part of it might be that I am hispanic it might have been better received if I had simple pretended to be american by birth however I'm not going to lie about my race or upbringing even due to the whims of the site I enjoy so.

Well, it is a wide generalization, but it just that a generalization. I'm not saying that all american children don't listen however I am saying that for the most part they don't tend to strive for greatness. This is not to say that they don't, but when you live in a place where many people starve you tend to reach farther when given the chance. Since all Americans have the chance not as many feel inclined to reach.Once again I'm not saying america is a bad place, it was america that gave me my chance, I simply say that American children are by the majority unmotivated.
TLDR: it is indeed a generalization, but it is based on personal data and experience and does not dis-include the fact that there are hard working Americans.

you've most likely never been to America then. either that or, you must be looking at bad schools as examples. and you cant say that they don't strive for greatness. every country will ALWAYS have slackers, and I'm not saying america doesn't, but they also have people who work hard to achieve their dreams and get a good job. its also offensive to me because I'm currently a student here in 'murica.

I was born in Mexico, and then moved to the united states, during my time in middle and highschool in the united states I was in three different schools one in Texas, on in Florida, and One in New York. Two poorish urban communities and one wealthier rural community so I think I have a decent grip and a unique veiwpoint on the average American child. Overall I observed a resounding lack of desire to change ones station, and a mojority of those who did seek to do so had some warped concept Great Gatsbyish of the american dream in which doing something underhanded or without much effort would somehow elevate them above their station. I mean to cast no aspersion on you or America as a whole and it's fine to have a differing opinion from mine, but when the vast majority of the population resists learning they have to be spoonfed and the over all value of the system decreases and then they blame it on the system when they don't know something. This blaming it on the system when ones education is lacking through the fault of their parents or their own is what upsets me.

So going to 3 schools in America allowed you to grasp the mind set of American kids?American kids are more competitive when education is involved in the 21st century since college can be selective. Also most public schools do not teach kids anything that the op stated, which is on of the reasons why the American education system is average or below average. I go to an expensive(cost more than most colleges) college prep private high school where you are forced to take college level corses, if you don't know a certain subject when you enter the school you are fucked, you write s shit load of papers, if it wasn't for certain teachers it would mostly be memorization rather than a balance with discussion.

So someone who goes to a school where you're expected to know things has more experience and a better frame of reference than someone who went to public secondary and highschool in three different cities before moving on to collage? I'm afraid, not to be critical, that you don't really belong in this conversation as you go to private schools that aren't even part of the system. This is not to be critical of you however, I am simply stating you lack the type of depth I have having been in ll types of programs from remedial to AP and IB programs in multiple settings. I believe this gives me a better average then the small selection you've witnessed, however thank you for your time.

Also another point: most people in america have the internet and therefore access to nearly limitless information. If you've been neglected so bad then why haven't you looked up how to do the stuff instead of complaining?

My point regarding American kids are more competitive when education is involved is fact since colleges are expecting a well rounded student, with good grades, community service, students who have experience with jobs, SAT, ACT, rigorous classes, awards, other activities and sports. Acceptance rates of most college have decreased over the years. I did not make a statement generalizing a group people based on going to three school out of a million + population. Private school is part of the American education is system in America and I did go to public before I entered into my current school so I do belong in this conversation.

Upon review your comment is correct, however I don't actually believe this reflects anything about the work ethic of students. If it is accurate then why is the rate of Dropping out and GED's so high for highschool students? 20% of all diplomas in recent years have been from GED's. While there are still people who do reach I don't believe this speaks well to the general populace. To use an analogy simply because the game is harder doesn't mean there are more good players.

You do realize an education is supposed to assist you in life? The point is you are supposed to be prepared for the "outside world" and not 25-4(56x34)=Imafucktard.

Mathematics will assist you in your life, if you choose to do anything that involves them(Engineer, etc).
