My grandfather was a Swedish fisherman.
He was just dong his job to feed his family when he was torpedoed and killed by a British sub.

My grandma and her dad tossed a coin whether he'd return from the war or not. It landed on the you-wont-return-side.
He died in '43 in some battle in Ukraine by getting shot in the armpit and bleeding to death.
We keep his medical report in a frame on the wall.

My Grandpa's friend won one of the rarest medals for aerial valor because of an accident.

He was a pilot, and when you fly a bomber plane in WWII your sorties tend to take a really long time. Long enough that you had to take a piss in the middle of flight. Of course, the pilot couldn't leave his post otherwise the plane could crash. So instead he had a bucket underneath his chair, and if he really needed to take a piss he could stand up and do the business there without leaving his post.

So he was coming back from a bombing run. He really needed to take a piss so he stood up to do the deed. But just at that moment the plane hit severe turbulence. The only thing that saved him was that his head was down, but he hit the ceiling so hard he broke his shoulder. He had no choice but to fly the plane from mainland Europe back to England with a broken shoulder, all because he took a piss at the wrong time. There weren't even any enemies anywhere near them, hence he thought it was safe to do it.

Because he brought the plane back safely despite severe injuries, the guy won what is probably the highest ranking aerial medal in the war. Sadly I cannot remember the name of the medal; it wasn't my grandpa who won it after all (though he did win many medals and served as a navigator throughout the entirely of the war).

Saving Private Ryan is NOT the most accurate WWII movie ever made, by far. If you want to see something accurate on WWII... watch 'Come and See.' Just be ready for the fact that it is a genuinely scary movie not because it's a horror movie but because it's so real.
