I remember when I was in like 1st-6th grade if you even dropped a pencil your ass was done for.

I remember an Arab teacher made us run laps around the school when we did stupid shit or answered wrong... And I'm fat as fuck.

I used to have to do that.
I called out a lot as a kid. It was supposed to be one lap for every time you called out, and I got around 30 laps in one day. We only had to run around a tiny playground, though.

Well... Around our school was aprox. three quarters of a mile...

2nd grade I think. Its was only the one teacher who did it.

We only had one doing that, but we got the cone of shame too, but no one dared complaining.

Yes, when that one kid that's not you is standing in the corner with it. On the other hand, when my four chins were squeesing out of that thing... Not so much.

I feel like i'd be able to play it off better, but then again, my social environment is more friendly than most. My school is a bit unique

I go to a magnet school. Its a small school that is part of a bigger one. The only real difference is the classes you take, although some you share with the main school.
Due to the small classes, almost everybody is friends with everybody. Therefore, i could wear the cone without embarrassment and probably get a few laughs out of it too.

To clear things up, I don't have tiny little kid hands :P They're just smaller than average. I write with the tip of my index finger and second joint of my middle finger in cursive, so it's let me use pencils that way even though my hands have grown a bit since elementary.

While I agree, kids do get away with too much shit, having to wear a cone would be too much.

I am norwegian and went to an american high school for one year. it was hell compared to my school in norway. the teachers and the rest of the staff was so strict, it was like a prison compared to my norwegian school... (also the school was shaped after an actual prison :O)

I went in to one of the store and they were only twenty dollars (on sale) and online they're only 40 (on sale again) nowadays jeans average at around 50-70...

I don't mind Hollister for most things, their clothes are ok (though I would never pay that much for simple casual clothing), but I do dislike that they only hire people who look like complete douches who spend 50% of their time at Hollister and the other 50% at the gym.

Eh, somehow I feel like the punishment is a pretty small factor in the equation. I think some kids, based on their personal beliefs and upbringings, will fail to develop good standards regardless of how much and in what fashion they're punished. Plus, there are always those kids who just develop a vengeance for their punishers that's roughly equivalent to the seriousness of the punishment.
tl;dr it just comes down to whether it's a good kid or a bad kid

True. Though this can work for some and not for others. And there are people who are just lost causes and you really can't do much so you're still right of course.

Yeah, either way you're gonna have to make some generalizations about society. There's never any easy answer.

The thing is since we don't have school choice the punishments have to be ones that everyone agrees on. Otherwise we're basically forcing parents to send their kids to schools that, in their opinion, will abuse them. If we had school choice then you can have schools with harsh punishments, and if it's effective, and parents like it, then they can choose to send their kids there. Frankly though, not every kid will respond well to this kind of punishment.

also the punishment is pretty subjective, and the teacher could give it to anyone that upsets them, proves them wrong, disagrees, etc. If you've ever been in school I'm sure you've experienced at least one instance of a teacher exploiting their power unfairly

True but that's an issue with the teacher not the punishment itself. For example she can give detention to a student and your argument becomes a tautology. In other words either way it's true in all cases that she can deal out unfair punishment. Detention and other punishments are used to deter behavior. It generally doesn't work because there isn't any real punishment. The same idea is used for this cone punishment. If you honestly think that the emotional bullying would be that bad than I would beg to differ. Also it wouldn't be singling kids out because all kids would be subject to the exact same punishment.

At a time in people's bodies are producing hormones that are known to make them emotionally unstable, and with all the reports of teen bullying leading to suicide, yes, I think this punishment is cruel.
example: "hey I saw you wearing that cone earlier johnny, is it cause you have no balls faggot?"

People who commit suicide are usually dealt prolonged exposure to bullying. This cone punishment most likely won't become a situation where someone is bullied their entire high school years over that. It will most likely will be temporary. The current punishments don't work because they don't cause a real reason for most people to avoid repeating the behavior.

if you mess about. or disrupt the class. the clown is being a dick. he is not letting the rest of the class get a good education and so he should be punished
