Because fungi couldn't metabolise wood for nearly 50 million years, carbon became trapped in fallen trees. As a result, the oxygen levels sky-rocketed. With the increase of fuel and oxygen, global fire storms were common. This turned the fallen trees into charcoal, and the charcoal over time became coal.
