my grandfather was captured by the Germans and had to guard a weapon factory, it was hard work but after that he was brought to another town and there he worked in a food factory in an office. He had to share a house with other men but they where all nice and he made friends. He had nice food and had a lot of freedom, he went to the cinema four times in a week and went to dance nights. He had two girlfriends in the time he was in Germany. It sounds like he didn't have it so bad in the war, he made the best out of a bad situation.

Germans are stupid. Why would you have a prisoner guard a weapons factory?

Also, in Ireland PoWs had a pretty awesome time during the World Wars. They could go out on the town, mingle with our locals, do whatever, but they just couldn't leave. We were neutral but they were still technically prisoners.

They had to inform the rest if an alarm went of at night, that was his job I think. And yeah the same for my grandfather, he was free to do what he wanted as long as he did his work.
