I hate patents, they limit the progression and advancement of technology by hindering the competition rather than trying to up their own game to stay on top, microsoft and apple are the two biggest
culprits of this.

That's not at all what patents do.

Patents are fantastic... Apple just abuses them. Patents are used not to limit ideas, just to prevent someone from stealing yours. I'm working my ass off right now to try and patent my own personal product so when I graduate college I can put it into production. I would kill myself if someone were to steal and produce the idea I've been in the process of creating for the last 5 years.

Apple are dickheads, and they shouldn't be suing like mad like they are, but patents are a requirement for business. And again, they don't limit the advancement of technology. By adding/upgrading previous models, you can create your own patent. It's beyond me how Apple is winning these lawsuits, just because they want more money for selling an inferior product.

But whatever.

Yes but patenting things like a piece of glass with round edges is fucking retarded.

If Apple is able to do that then I should be able to patent a round piece of glass with square edges and fuck over every last company who uses rectangular glass.

That is literally exactly what I just said.

Apple abuses them, but that doesn't mean patents are a bad thing.

Think of all that Google has done to avoid patent suits with the new versions of Android (ICS and Jelly Bean.) To avoid any disputes with buttons on the front, Google implemented a customizable navbar at the bottom of your screen. While I do agree our patent system is shit, I understand the benefits they can have.

I say patents should be limited to five years. It give you time to make money, and it allows for progression.

although there are certainly patents that are misused, they are the bedrock of innovation. Patents exist for 2 reasons. 1 so that you have to make your creation public and therefor after your patent ends, it is available what you did, rather than keeping it a secret. In return, you get some 20 years of protection FROM large companies who could easily make your product faster cheaper and better than you could.
Without patents our entire start up biotechnology industry which bloomed in the advent of molecular genetics would have simply ceased to exist. Without patent protection many of the companies you know and love today wouldn't exist because a larger company could have stolen their idea and created it themselves.

TL:DR Patent protection protects the little guy in 90% (made up number) of cases. Don't throw patents out the window because of stupid DRM laws or a couple of bad lawsuits
