Actually metal gets its name from the Steppenwolf song "Born to be Wild", in it there is a line that says, "heavy metal thunder", this line was talking about motorcycles, but people thought it was about the type of music. As you can see, the name stuck.

Really? Because if I dropped a big rock on a car, I'm pretty sure the metal would dent while the rock would be just fine.

So...if someone could rebut this, that would be swell.

but what if you dropped a rock made out of pure metal?

Then it wouldn't be a rock, it would be a big chunk of metal being dropped on another object made of metal, and then the experiment is pointless because there's no rock to compare it to.

And my point is that metal bends, whereas rock does not. The most you can do to rock is break it, but it will never bend.

depending on the density and the malleability of the metal.

that would be because you are dropping many tons of rock on a few millimeters of aluminum and maybe a half inch on steel

try that with an equally sized block of metal

You can also dent a car with water if you have enough of it. that doesn't mean that water is harder than metal, it's just that there is more of it. You did pose a valid argument however.

Hmmm thats a really good point. I guess it may all be relative to what kind of rock youre using or what kind of metal youre using. I read in a comment around here made by whipptron (above) that the average rock is harder than the average metal. If that is indeed the case then i stand corrected. At least i can say i learned something today.

I didn't realize you were going to reply to this comment and I deleted it because I realized I had inadvertently contradicted myself. I argued against the pressure argument with another pressure argument. My apologies.

This may have to do with part of it, although alot have said it was due to Black Sabbath's guitarist having a metal finger tip.

This was posted a few months ago and alot of people explained it, just wait for one of them to come along.
