The US has a larger populace as opposed to some of the smaller nations - therefore there are many athletes entered in many sporting events. Granted, America did good (compared to the amount of people and athletes China have, for example).
The populace of the US is roughly 311,591,917 people.
I'm from the U.K. - population: around 62 million people.
For us to finish third is absolutely phenomenal. We're not normally anywhere near the top in the medals table and we have broke a personal best for medals. The per capita medal ratio is considerably higher, for us.
America are expected to do good, anyway.

That argument isn't completely valid though, because every country has the same number of opportunities to medal for each event. An Olympic hopeful took second at the American Olympic trials, he wouldn't have the chance to go to the Olympics even though the winner of another country's trials may have not done as well as him.
