"Hansel and Gretel" actually can be considered, and has been seen by some, as an anti-semetic tale. The children are blonde, blue-eyed Germans who live in the heart of the Schwarzwald. Their father cannot support their family, and economic troubles were always tied to the presence of the Jews. The witch is a grotesque, large-nosed crone, which was a popular generalization of Jews for centuries. The Jews were often accused of committing ritual murder, using Christian children to fulfill all sorts of unholy ceremonies. Once the "witch" is disposed of, all of the family's problems are magically solved.
