A) that's not how an average works. Most people who didn't die ridiculously young lived to 50-60, maybe even 70.

B) Puberty still happened at the same time in the human life cycle, meaning that those 13 year old in the 1300s were physically the same as today. Hell, I think I remember a study that says the age for the start of puberty has been going down in the last two centuries.

To be fair, the average was brought down by all the dying infants and women who died in childbirth.

Although back in medieval times, hygiene was very poor, or non existant, the medicine was bad, bad living conditions, hard work in fight against nature, poverty and so on. There is poverty now but atleast people can get back up, or receive free healthcare.

I skipped Year 0, (the education system is different in New Zealand.) So I've always been the youngest in my class since I started school in the first place. My birthdays also in February and school starts in February so I was a 12 year old Freshman for a few weeks. lol

so who exactly did this test? not disputing it, just saying, anyone can make a graph. not to mention the way the data is used/presented can have a huge impact on how the trends "appear" to change, for example, if instead of showing every 4 years you showed the rate yearly, or if you showed it every 5 years over the last 50-60 years or even the last 200 years in america, it could look drastically different...

well with alcohol, smoking, various drugs, two world wars, a depression and even radiation at some times, I have no doubts that the last couple of generations was definitely not the best. I'm just saying that looking at 50 years to judge the last generation compared to the current one is flawed, you know? I'd have to see trends for that sort of thing over a couple of hundred years, and then see some parallels, like some other countries close to our social/technological standpoints, to know if things like this are global trends, local trends, and if they are actually due to the generations values or not, for all I know waiting to marry (and all the other things) a girl until she's 18 may have been pretty conservative back in 1834. and then you have to look at where the data for these were taken. everybody says their data is fair, but they couldn't have possibly checked every hospital record in the country, and then cross referenced it with birth certificate records to make sure that they didn't miss anything. just because a study is biased doesn't mean that it's on purpose, a survey done online is biased because it can only be answered 1) by regular viewers of the site, and 2) by people with computers and internet access. that's a lot of people who's say goes unheard, and thus it is biased, but the researcher and a third party can also say that since it was presented fairly, and was blind to things like the reader's demographic that it is completely fair and unbiased. seewaddimean?

again, not saying you're wrong, just saying that we should never take these things as fact, because it's so easy to be biased or just plain wrong in the statistics without ever being called out for it, a lot of people consider statistics to be perfect, and the fact is that there is no perfect and 100% factual statistic, and usually if you change one little thing (the "source" of info, method of gathering info, presentation of info, and what the aim of the study is, if a researcher is trying to prove that X is true, he might perform the test in a way that is more likely to prove his theory, whereas if a researcher just want to find out and answer to a question (ie, what is the most common age to smoke, etc) and he has no theories, and no ulterior motives (ie not trying to prove more/less kids are smoking now than ever, etc.) than it's more likely to be more fair, and even with blind/double blind studies, if the researchers are not biased than the experiment itself will pretty much always have something that is flawed about it which drastically affects data. that's why it's basically impossible to take a truly good statistic.

I'd have to see some proof that American mentality on age of consent and sex in general was so different that it would be useless in a study. also, a 20 year study on modern america is useless, from the 30's to the 2000's america had some big changes in trends, things like smoking, driving habits/trends, protection/sex/and stds. so many things changed during that time, especially because of the technological boom which changed society so much, you cannot take a single trend from a 20 year period in modern america and call it a blanket fact.
