I might get hated because of this, but after seeing all three movies of Nolan's trilogy (several times), my favorite is still Batman Begins. Super underrated film. Lot's of people don't even know it came before the Dark Knight. Oh, and it has Liam Neeson in it. Beat that.

More people went to see TDKR, they just played less to see it. Since it wasn't in 3D. 3D tickets are 2-4 bucks mores than the average tickets.
Plus, Warner bros. cancelled a few premiers such as in Tokyo & Paris.
TDKR also made almost 30 million on advanced midnight ticket sales. Where the Avengers only made 18 million. Plus TDKR is highest record breaking 2D film, and record breaking Imax film.

Also, there are 5 or 6 different heroes.
It attracts 6 varying fanbases.
For example, if Tony Stark wasn't in the Avengers, I wouldn't have gone to see The Avengers in it. I don't really care about the Hulk, Captain, Hawkeye, or Thor. Just throwing in Stark increased the movie's audience by drawing in people like me.
