And in G1, those ponies pretty much die and turn into evil dragons.

We live in slightly less violent times.

Fewer henchmen, but the main villains got way more badass.

Yeah, g1 had some pretty dark themes to it, for some of it at least.

Characters were still as developed as cardboard, but the villains were at least pretty cool.

can't say the same for g2-g3.5. G2 abandoned the whole mythology/adventure aspect all together, replacing it with drama, and g3 was extremely watered down and far more stereotypical.

Then g 3.5.....which is like spraying bleach into your eyes.

The G1 ponies look like they're about to get raped. (Too much La Blue Girl, I guess.)

To me it seems FIM is slowly getting a little more 'serious' as it goes a long, as evident with the season 2 finale. Maybe by the end of season 3 or possible season 4 we'll have episodes like this.
