Dude the according to the transcript of the movie(even the really old one) Godzilla was called Gojira. It is quite literally a portmanteau of the words Gorilla(gorira (ゴリラ) and Whale(kujira (鯨（クジラ）). Apparently one fo the early writers made the joke of this beasty being "as strong as a whale and a Gorilla".
