Likely the holes take a certain percentage of the cheese. Let's say 10%. So the more cheese, the more volume is lost to holes, but the overall volume still increases linearly.

That makes perfect sense. The more cheese present, the more volume of cheese missing because of the holes. The more holes there are, the more cheese is missing from the initial volume. Thus, the more cheese there is, the more cheese is missing, which is true, though the volume missing remains at roughly the same percent as it was initially

I know its a joke. heh heh. So the implication then is that a large wheel of cheese has x number of holes, and those holes shrink as the cheese is cut.
