In any work of sci-fi that involves space travel and alien contact, the writers are quick to explain away the language barrier by saying "super translator" or something. The only one I've found is Oban Star Racers-all the aliens spoke english, or at least the humans could understand, and it was never explained.

Dr. Who doesn't count for this one, by the way.

In the second episode of the first series of the Dr. Who reboot they explain that once you have traveled in the tardis you can understand and speak any language. I can't remember why, something to do with the time vortex or something.
