Actually, when Isaac Newton demonstrated that white light from the Sun could be split into its component colours, he sub-divided the blue spectrum into 'blue, indigo and violet'. This wasn't because of what he observed, but because there was a preference for the number seven in the scientific community of those times.

Therefore, it can be called whatever it want, as the original basis for the name was entirely subjective.

I call that one color purple.

Well technically the rainbow's color is still violet, Not purple.

I have my preferences.
I know most people call it violet, I just call it purple.
