A lot of people below saying "Who only gets paid once a month" etc..

I live in England and I can confirm that most, if not all, jobs pay you on a monthly basis.

Rarely, weekly but that's usually on a temporary contract.

Am I missing something here, maybe a different way of paying in other countries?

I imagine it depends on the job. I know plenty of manual labor jobs and part-time work in the US pays on a weekly or biweekly basis.

I'm sure there are some jobs that do pay on a monthly basis, but in the US welfare checks are typically delivered monthly; hence the comments saying "sounds like welfare".

Heh, It's good to learn. I believe here welfare/benefits are given on a bi-weekly basis (If someone could back me up that'd be great).

I'm being paid weekly at the moment myself, but that's just because I'm back from university for the summer, meaning a temporary contract.
