correct me if im wrong, but havent we already send stuff to mars before? why is everyone acting like this is somthing new?
Two reasons mainly.
1) The first couple of probes we sent were really just the size of large RC cars so landing them on Mars pretty much just consisted of wrapping them in an airbag and letting them bounce until they bleed off the energy of landing. This one is the size of a small car (like a Mini Cooper of Ford Focus) so it required an actual landing vessel so the engineering on it is WAY ahead of the other missions. This can lead to manned space missions later using similar techniques.
2) The main mission of this probe is to look for either existing life on Mars (microorganisms) or the possibility that they existed at some time and see if conditions are favorable to them existing again. If microorganisms exist the possibility that we can put a colony there goes up.
