I've survived off minimum wage without any problems. The secret is to not live beyond your means.

Unless you're getting a degree/diploma in business, engineering, healthcare or a trade, then don't bother going to college because you're just pissing away your money.

I went to university and yes I am now in thousands of pounds worth of debt and (because I live in England) not much more likely to get a job BUT I had the best 3 years of my life and met some amazing people! And now i'm moving in with my best friend where we went to Uni and I feel great! I am poor but I don't even care

I love it when the State pays me other people's hard-paid tax money so that I can get an education without having to take out loans...

This is pretty stupid. It's called an investment; spend some money to make a lot more in the long run.

Okay guys, I know this isn't the best place for asking but I'd like to hear your opinion. Is it worth being an English Major? English is the only subject I'm sort of good at (not my first language, though this isn't relevant). Would I end up serving fries for those who major in engineering?

Do what you love to do. Don't do something purely for the money. You will regret not doing what you love.

until only doing what you love grants you absolutely no money and you start wishing you had done something useful to the economy instead

That's true. I would feel like a complete waste of space. Sure, I could translate a paper there and there but that wouldn't land enough money nor would I need a degree in english for that kind of work. I get the feeling my parents want me to become a teacher but I sure as hell don't want to be one.

I suppose you could try to become famous. TBH whenever I get asked what sort of job I want to get after/during college I give them this face ಠ_ಠ (I'm a lazy ****, I don't WANT any job). Then I get asked what sort of job I would be good at and I have absolutely no idea. It's a bit of a dilemma.

Well...I would love to write characters for video games or something of that sort. I guess it's just childish dreaming of mine.
Heh, when I'm bored or trying to fall asleep I make up stories in my own fantasy RPG setting, putting characters and the world piece by piece. Someday, when I'll have all the pieces together I just might try to write it all down.

But you see, the dilemma is that I like to cook and would love to advance my skills in this area and someday start my own business. My parents outright force me to go to university, get a useless degree (English Major) and only then I would be free to do what I want. I just don't know. My parents won't be paying for my studies, they were very clear about that. They won't have me living in their place either, so as soon as i'm done with school this year I'll live on my own back. I just wan't to know if it's worth spending four years of my life studying english in university.

I may be an exception to the rule, but I tried college, but had to work to pay the bills instead. I got on as a nobody for the local department of transportation. Now, 8 years after I graduated HS, I have worked my way through the trenches and now make a very nice salary designing structural components for bridges and oil field foundations at a huge engineering firm.

For me, it was about my attitude, willingness to learn, and the understanding that I was going to have to work for what I wanted.
