First Pokemon I ever caught: A level two Pidgey, Yellow version. I took him from level 2 to level 100. Never once did he see the inside of the Box. We went everywhere together. He effortlessly solo'd the Elite Four, and I transferred him over to Silver, and he solo'd the Elite Four and Red, as well. I put the game down and didn't think about it much.
Years later, I wanted to check up on my old bro. Maybe go through the Elite Four again for old times sake. It was gone. Everything was gone.
I cried.
I miss you, Pidgeot.

Semi-related, Ampharos is my all time favourite pokemon.
After someone stole my HG cartridge with my EV trained, level 100 Ampharos, my friend got me a holo Ampharos card.
I almost cried from awesomeness. Pic related, it's the card.

There's a way to replace your save battery and play that game again:
open up the case (the screw has an annoying head but you can get it off with nail scissors) now the green board with all the circuitry is free for you to remove and work on.
gently sever the terminals from the battery with an x-acto knife, there will be one on top and below, remove the old battery, now take a new CR2025 (you can get them at most hardware stores) and bend each terminal tip over a bit so they'll protrude a little. now this is not an approved method by everybody but I taped the whole assembly firmly back in place with electrical tape and closed it back up. it still works fine today.
