With all due respect, I have no idea how a brief segment of a song could be considered 'good' whilst the rest of it is perceived as garbage. I'd say that it is mostly vocally exhaustive songs that have a propensity of being regarded as 'catchy', therefore a tune cannot be good nor bad judging by its catchiness.

To the first part: Well, sure. I've heard many people say it about many different songs. I can easily say "Well I like the chorus of this song, but not so much the rest," and you can just as well say it about the bridge/verses/beginning/end etc. Different parts of a song can sound better or worse to different people.

To the second part: I'm not sure what you mean by vocally exhaustive. Care to give some examples? Cause I don't see how you used that to draw a conclusion that the catchiness can't be used to judge it being good/bad.

Also, I wasn't saying that the catchiness can be used to judge a song on a whole... I was just saying that for me, personally, it provides a lot when a song is catchy because I can easily and enjoyably listen to it. (which is why I tend to label catchy songs as "good" or "well done" most of the time)

Whilst I completely agree that different sections of a song may elicit different responses and reviews, my point persists. I cannot imagine a person breaking down a song into different parts and stressing his utmost approval for one bit and then his paramount hatred for another. However, suggesting that it is acceptable for a person to say "I think that song is decent but the chorus really appealed to me" is perfectly plausible (if that is your point).

By 'vocally exhaustive', I am implying songs that profoundly rely on their vocal qualities, eg. pretty much any 'pop' song. The link I'm drawing was the notion that it specifically tends to be these abovementioned songs that are viewed as catchy; you don't get to see many metal/classical fans discussing the 'catchy' aspects of their favourite songs, do you? Hence, if someone were to tell me that a song is catchy, I would not instantaneously tell them that it is a good or bad song; rather, I would infer that the song he pertained to is probably a vocally exhaustive one, meaning that it's up to me to form my own opinion of it. I'm not trying to start a squabble, I'm merely pointing out my own views.

But for your first part, that's exactly what I think. Believe me, I'm not going to say that I hate the verses but ADORE the chorus. It's more like how you said, where I'll say "yeah, the song is decent but one part appealed to me more"

Also, I wouldn't say that a catchy song is mostly a vocally exhaustive one. I do agree that it's mostly pop songs that really gain that label of "catchy"....but I don't think it has much to do with the vocals. I'd posit that it's the beat. The pop songs that we see as "catchy" nowadays seem to have a very particular type of beat that one doesn't really find in metal/classical or other music. They're the type of songs that you can really (for want of a better example) just bob your head to! It's just got THAT kind of beat. That, coupled with carefully organized melody, and you'd have the makings of a catchy song, in my opinion. I wouldn't say it's the vocals, so much as the beats/melodies working as one that make a song ultimately catchy.

Also, that isn't to say that other genres of music can't be catchy. It's just some are better suited than others. The beats and melodies used in metal/classical for example again are probably just not the best to elicit that feeling we get when we hear a song we find catchy! (it may be so for some people, who knows?) But certainly jazz music, to me, has the qualities to be extremely catchy - as does RnB, some classic rock, etc. It all differs depending on the person....But I'd say that catchiness comes from the beat/melody. Not so much the vocal aspect.

Well, you might be hooked on this certain beat, whereas others might detest it or feel irrelevant about it (like I do). I'm not exactly too astute when it comes to music, as in I only have a narrow range of genres that I like to listen to, so I suppose you probably know better than me "the makings of a catchy song", so to speak. Nonetheless, I concur that the definition of 'catchy' certainly varies from person to person, as in the same way that I relate vocally profound songs to the concept of being 'catchy', you liken the catchiness of a song to its predominant beat.

Yeah, the catchiness isn't everything, for sure. But it's big, for me personally. Like, I can still listen to a song that doesn't necessarily have lyrical substance for example. But for me to LOVE the song, hell yeah, it's got to be there.

I agree, and I feel like some people look for the worst in things on this website. Im not saying I like Nicki Minaj, but people make fun of her worst songs (They're not great songs, but they appeal to the current generation.) No matter how much complaining someone does, its not going to change interests or others' behavior. The only thing you can do is deal with it, no matter how much is displeases you.

Actually, a song being good has nothing to do with the listener's opinion. If you don't like that type of music, it doesn't make it bad. It has to do with how complex the song is, the meaning, and the rhythm. The thing is, One Direction and Nickelback aren't as bad as they're portrayed. One Direction is just annoyingly catchy and the fans are complete retards. Nickelback is really just bandwagon hatred.

Nope. Music is entirely subjective and personal opinion, everything you listed has no relevance to how "good" a song is. It's impossible for music to be good or bad because it's an opinion. There's no "standard" for good music just as there's no standard for any art form. Therefore the only way a song can be "good" is if you yourself enjoy it. Then that's only your preference.

Just as you say the fans are complete retards, I'll say that the people who constantly hate on them are also complete retards. The difference is they're listening to music they enjoy because they enjoy it while haters constantly bitch about how other people are stupid for having an personal preference.

Music is only subjective to a point. If a song is really bad or really good, it will be acknowledged as such.
