He's right. Without gloves if a average human were to punch another person in the head specifically the jaw with his full force he would more than likely break his hand. Any boxer/fighter knows this and usually refrains from using his full power in a bare-knuckle fight. With gloves on the fighters are capable of punch with all of their strength and suffer minimal bone damage (unless you hit someone in the hip in which case you can still break your hand). Before the use of boxing gloves it would not be unusual for boxing matches to go 50 or more rounds sometimes even close to 100. Fights would be decided not be who was knocked out but who gave up due to exhaustion if neither fighter would give/collapse up it went on until they both agreed to a draw or they both collapsed.

TLDR: you punch someone bare-knuckled full strength you'll break your hand gloves do allow you to punch harder.
